Role Playing is based on an honour "story telling" system. Play takes place within a continuing never-ending "story line" and players create their world around them as they go. Players
honour their own characters and others by staying within the events of the story line, and not creating situations or characters so far-fetched it ruins play for everyone.
Making a Character
The two most important things to keep in mind when making a Character are:
1. Choose something that you will enjoy playing.
2. Choose something that those around you will enjoy playing with.
Your character should fit into the story. If the story you want to be in is set at the king's court then it would be silly to make your character a Namarran barbarian who cannot really fit into the story. Your character should have a history, a personality and a purpose.
Role-Playing Rules
1. Controlling Others. This is a big no-no! You cannot make someone else's character do anything. This might upset another role-player, who was planning to do something else. If two characters are in a fight, you cannot say "Lady Tellty threw a dagger at Jack, who was hit in the shoulder." Jack must decide whether he gets hit or whether he avoids the dagger. Try to make it realistic, your character must take hits sometimes or else the fight would go on forever.
2. God PCs. This is a character who has too many strengths and not enough weaknesses. A strength might be the ability to have excellent eye sight, or to be an expert in martial arts, or to be extremely clever. A weakness might be someone who is too quick to trust people, or to be hopeless at fighting. If you have too many strengths your character will be
invincible and will make the game boring for others.
3. Stay in Character. As Erith is set in times similar to medieval, your character must act like a medieval person and not like a 21st century person. For example, if you are a knight and have been presented with a new horse, he would NOT say "Yeah, cool! Thanks a bunch!" He would say something along the lines of "I thank thee, kind sir. I believe this steed is the fairest in the land."
4. Write in third person and past tense. Fairly self-explanatory, you must write in third person and past tense! For example, do not say "Lady Tellty comes into the room and sits down." or "I come into the room and sit down". You would say "Lady Tellty came into the room and sat down".
5. Physics. Characters should follow the physics of their surroundings. If someone describes a rain storm... you get wet. Then you have to deal with walking around wet in mud and muck, or whatever is around you. Naturally, you will be slower and it will be harder for you to see. If you are walking up a mountain and an avalanche occurs, you can only run, hide or use some type of skill or ability that you posses in order to aid you. You can not simply dance around on the tumbling rocks like a lumberjack because that is outside typical character's physical abilities without the use of special skills. A character can not do anything outside normal physical limitations unless he/she is gifted with special abilities or has a magical
artefact.
6. Manner. Treat others as you would like to be treated, do not be rude. This doesn't apply to the actual
role-playing, if your character is a rude person then they can do whatever they want. But be nice in the out of character forums. No flaming, pornography or swearing is tolerated.
